Lao business forum logistics industry consultation overview

Mr. Chanthone Sitthixay, Vice President of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LNCCI) and Head of the Logistics Industry Consultation Working Group, had the honor of chairing the meeting under the mechanism of the Lao Business Forum. Attending the meeting were Mr. Vanthong Sitthikoun, Vice President of LNCCI and Head of the Lao Business Forum Secretariat, businesses operating in the transport and logistics services sector, and the Lao Business Forum Secretariat, with a total of 34 delegates, including 11 women.
The purpose of the meeting was to report on the progress of issues raised in the previous Lao Business Forum, and to allow businesses in the logistics industry to propose, discuss, and identify priority issues that pose difficulties to the industry's business operations. Along with proposing solutions, these will be consolidated and sent to the Lao Business Forum Secretariat to be selected for the consultation process of the 16th Lao Business Forum in the next phase.
Addressing freight regulations and strategic growth
The content of the meeting can be summarized as follows:
Resolved proposals:
- Facilitating customs declaration
- Facilitating rail freight transport at the Vientiane South Station
Proposals in the process of being resolved:
- The procedure for bringing foreign trucks to transport goods in Lao PDR without transshipment to promote exports
- Improving the services of dry ports in Lao PDR
Discussing new issues:
- The implementation of truck load management regulations, especially the operation of weigh stations on main routes
- Services of the Laos - China Railway Company
- Development strategy for the transport and logistics services sector in the coming time
Following this meeting, the permanent Lao Business Forum Secretariat at the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry will coordinate with the Services Industry Consultation Working Group to consolidate the priority issues proposed by the delegates and prepare a recommendation document. This will be sent to relevant government agencies for study and preparation for the consultation meeting between the public and business sectors in the next phase.
The aforementioned meeting was sponsored by the Lao PDR Competitiveness and Trade (LCT) Project, a project receiving multi-donor contributions from the World Bank, the Australian Government, the Irish Government, and the United States Government. Its main objective is to reduce and eliminate barriers to business growth by improving the regulatory environment, lowering trade costs, and enhancing the competitiveness of the business sector.
